Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors found in female reproductive organs. They tend to be the most common cause of abnormal growths in female reproductive organs. Fibroids depend on estrogen for their growth and tend to diminish during the onset of menopause. There can be one or multiple fibroids, and they can range in size. Many women have had a fibroid or fibriods in their reproductive years, but don’t know due to the small size and lack of symptoms. Fibroids can impair or prevent conception or implantation if they are blocking the pathway to the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Common Fibroid Symptoms

· Heavy prolonged bleeding during periods
· Prolonged periods
· Bleeding in between periods
· Menstrual pain
· Infertility
· Miscarriage
· Constipation
· Back pain and pain during intercourse
· Iron deficiency and anemia due to heavy bleeding

Doctors diagnose fibroids through pelvic exams, vaginal ultrasounds, MRIs, and occasionally through biopsy. Western treatment for fibroids consists of drug therapy (such as Lupron) and/or surgical removal of the fibroid.

Chinese Medicine & Fibroids

Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine can provide and noninvasive and gentle coarse of treatment to help shrink the fibroids. This can help to increase the likelihood of successful movement of the embryo into the uterus and increase the likelihood of implantation and pregnancy.

Acupuncture & Fibroid Research

One Chinese study used TCM to treat 223 cases of uterine fibroids. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine were both utilized. All patients were symptomatic with heavy bleeding, etc. Following a course of treatment, most patients’ symptoms decreased, and the fibroids were diminished or had dissipated in 72% of patients.
